Tongues have been wagging. Nairobi Azimio La Umoja gubernatorial aspirant, Polycarp Igathe, has titillated Kenyans after he anchored news in Swahili. Reading from a script on Monday, May 23rd 2022 via a teleprompter, Igathe was not just articulate but also demonstrated a good mastery of Swahili which must have surprised many Kenyans.
From comments on the clip available on Youtube, viewers appeared to have been impressed by igathe’s performance with many expressing the view that as opposed to Kenya Kwanza coalition, Igathe adds value to azimio campaigns.
Igathe was challenged to read the news by new anchor Lofty Matambo who also expressed fears that Igathe could return to rob him of his job after he is done with politics.
Igathe is seeking to take over from Governor Ann Kananu as the fourth governor of Nairobi city. During his campaign excursions, Igathe appears to be moving away from “talking to voters”, preferring to listen to what they want him to do once he takes over.
The Kenyan businessman, who is known for changing jobs at will, quit as Deputy Governor of Nairobi following the take-over of Nairobi by former Gairobi Governor, Mike Sonko.
His ability to speak swahili aside, Igathe has been seen riding a lorry packed with oranges and cabbages at Marikiti market in Nairobi while he has also been spotted riding a donkey cart in Ruai, much to the amusement of Azimio supporters.
While the Igathe theatrics continue to play, the bigger question is whether he will be able to convince voters in Nairobi that he is fit for the big post.
